| この小冊子を書き始めたときには介助者の一助になればと思っていました。し かし、少し書き進んだところで、多くの部分が、日ごろ、私たち自身が英語を話し 教える場面で気をつけていることがらと共通していることに気がつきました。つま り、「思いやり」はどのような「異文化」の場面においても同じことだということです 。従って、この小冊子には車椅子介助のために直接役立つこと以外に、一般的 に英語の話し手として気をつけたほうが良いと思われることを書きました。 私たちの身の周りにさまざまな形で存在している異文化が異文化としてではな く、しっかり認識され尊重され、単純に「一つの文化」になる日が早く来るようにと 願っています。 ２００２年９月２７日 べテル英語センター 大 坂 忠 フレーザー・ドナルド Introduction When we began writing this booklet we had in mind that it might be helpful for wheelchair caregivers. However, as it progressed we realized that many of theparts were basically the same as what we had been stressing when using English or teaching it to our classes. That was to "be courteous"and "care for others."In other words, to "be courteous"and "care for others"should be extended to any foreign culture or person. Therefore, this booklet contains not only phrases for wheelchair caregivers, but also for those who deal with foreign cultures in general. We long to see the day when foreign cultures, which exist around us in everyday life, are recognized and respected and are simply "one of the cultures"in our society.
