History*:
1934: Organised 13 May as direct successor to American Airways. Initial fleet included Curtiss Condor and a few Douglas DC-2s.
1936: Famous DC-3 built to airline's specification and entered service between Chicago and New York on 25 June.
During WWII: Half of fleet operated by Air Transport Command.
1947: First of 50 DC-6entered service, followed by 1948: Convair 240 entered service.
1953: Pioneered non-stop transcontinental service across US with DC-7.
1956: Operated transatlantic division, American Overseas Airlines, serving number of European cities, but sold out to Pan American in Sept.
1959: Introduced Lockheed L. 188A Electra in January and on 25 January same year operated first non-stop jet service between New YOrk and Los Angeles with Boeing 707-120.
1961: Turbofan-powered Boeing 707-320 went into service 12 March
1962: As jets added to fleet - Convair 990Ain March.
1964: Boeing 727 added to fleet, piston-engined aircraft phased out by December 1966.
1966: Order placed with Boeing for Boeing 747-100 and with McDonnell Douglas for DC-10.
1971: Latter went into service on 5 August on Los Angeles-Chicago route. Trans Caribbean merged into American on 2 March
1974: First Boeing 747-200F freighter service inaugurated 5 November.
1975: Swapped transpacific routes for Pan Am's Caribbean authority in June.
1978: Phase-out of 60 Boeing 707s accelerated, replaced by 30 Boeing 767-200 Ordered in November.
1982: First 767 service
1983: MD-82 joined fleet
1984: Ordered 67 MD-82s, plus 100 options in what was then largest-ever single aircraft purchase in US. Opened service to Frankfurt and Paris and started American commuter feeder network.
1987: Announced acquisition of 25 Airbus A300-600Rs for Caribbean services, and 15 Boeing 767-300ER for international routes. Air Cal merged into American on 1 July.
1988: Placed order for 50 Boing 757-200s.
1990: Acquired TWA route rights into UK, Continental's Miami-London route and Eastern Airlines' Central and South American network
1991: First of 19 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 entered service in spring. Introduced the first of its 95 Fokker 100s in July.
1998: American Airlines/British Airways Alliance. Ordered 42 EMB-145s and 25 Canadair 70-seat Regional Jets.

American Eagle
Executive Airlines (NA): American Eagle carrier since 1 June 1986, flying two distinct network, one from San Juan, Perto Rico to the Caribbean, and other from Miami, within Florida and to nearby Bahamas.
Wings West Airlines (RM): Founded in 1981 and American Eagle carrier since 1 June 1986. Purchased by AMR Corporation in August 1988. Provides network of services based on hubs at Los Angeles and Dallas/Ft. Worth.
Flagship Airlines (8N): Joined system 16 April 1986 and became subsidiary 31 December 1987. Operates out of Nashville, Miami, New York and Raleigh/Durham.
Simmons Airlines (MQ): Founded in 1978, joined Eagle system 1 October 1985, and purchased on 8 August 1988. Main bases at Chicago-O'Hare and Dallas/Ft. Worth.
